Founding
Mistral AI was founded in Paris in 2023 by Arthur Mensch, a former Google DeepMind researcher, and Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, who had worked on language models at Meta.
Open-weight models
- Mistral 7B (September 2023) — a small model released under the permissive Apache 2.0 licence, noted for performing well for its size.
- Mixtral 8x7B (December 2023) — a "mixture of experts" model: only part of the network is used for each word, which keeps it fast while giving it the knowledge of a larger model.
Because the weights of these models can be downloaded, anyone can run them on their own hardware — which made Mistral popular with developers and companies that want to keep data in-house.
Commercial models
Mistral also offers larger commercial models and a chat assistant, Le Chat, alongside its open releases.
Why it matters
Mistral showed that a small European team could compete with far larger companies, and it strengthened the open-weight approach that makes local, private AI possible.
